Rule #1 of mystery shopping is to NEVER pay for information. All of the information about mystery shopping you could ever want is available for free on the internet. By the same token if a mystery shopping company you are considering requests an ‘application fee’ or anything of the sort please be very careful. I have never been asked to pay anything to list myself with any of the companies I have ever shopped for.

Also be very aware there is a particularly nasty scam going around that masks itself as a legitimate shopping opportunity. Potential shoppers are asked to deposit a check, report on the service they received, and then wire the funds elsewhere. Problem is, the check will bounce and by the time your bank notifies you your money will be in unrecoverable in another country. While there are legitimate bank shopping assignments to be had, they do not involve you depositing a check!
