What’s in a name? Your mystery shopping report! Pt. 2

You can also ask directly for their name at the end of an interaction by saying something like, “I’m not quite ready to buy now, but what is your name in case I have any other questions?” “I’m going to look around a little more, what is your name in case I need anything else?”

Also be aware of the guidelines for your particular shop assignment. One assignment that requires multiple interactions with store associates prohibits mentioning an associate in your report unless they are wearing a nametag. Frankly, if I were an associate in that store I wouldn’t wear my tag on purpose to avoid being targeted by mystery shoppers.

Another method, although the least certain, is to call the location after you return home and ask about the associate - well and pray they’re not the one who answers the phone! Say something like, “This gentleman was so helpful answering all my questions, but I didn’t get his name. Could you help me?”

Sometimes despite all of your best efforts you will not get a name. If this happens be sure that you have a good description of the associate. Be aware of your mystery shopping company’s particular guidelines in these cases. Height, sex, hair color, eye color, age range, and if they are wearing glasses is usually a good base. Be aware that the employee in question will most likely read your report someday so please DO NOT use any descriptive terms that are offensive. Mentioning race is acceptable/not acceptable on a company-by-company basis. If you have any questions send an email to your shopper contact and ask what is allowed and not before completing your report. Any tattoos or facial piercings are usually allowed and can really narrow down your description.

Be aware and be prepared. Read all of those pesky instructions - depending on the shopping company your report may just be rejected if you don’t get that name.
